GPO : Registry key to disable short file name creation (Best Practice)

In my post Server 2012: Best Practice – Disable short file name creation I disabled short file name creation on a single DC, but as I don’t manually want to do this on all my DCs, I’m going to create a GPO to make sure it happens across the board.

Open Group Policy Management (gpmc.msc)

  1. Either edit an existing or create a new GPO
  2. Navigate to Computer Configuration – Preferences – Windows Settings, right-click Registry -> New -> Registry Item
  3. Action: Update
    Key Path: SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\FileSystem
    Value name: NtfsDisable8dot3NameCreation
    Value type: REG_DWORD
    Value data: 00000001
  4. You should take a look at the Common tab for future reference, as some of the settings there are quite usefull.
Click OK and close the Group Policy Management Editor window.
How to know if it Works:

Check the registry on a Domain Controller, or other target machine.
